Hi! I’m Sarah!
I’m a professional Science Communicator with an interest in astrobiology. I hold a Master’s of Science in Communications from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater and I am a PhD candidate at the University of North Dakota in Communications. I am also a research science affiliate in the science communication and education track with Blue Marble Space Institute of Science.
My PhD work studies the efficacy of communicating science in immersive media - specifically within planetarium domes. I am a recipient of two NASA SCoPE grants, that in partnership with NASA funded OpenSpace, Adler Planetarium, and NASA’S Jet Propulsion Laboratory, helps support this work.
I served as an on-board communications officer on Expedition 399 from April to June 2023 aboard the JOIDES Resolution, an NSF funded ocean core drilling research vessel, where we core drilled and fluid sampled around the Lost City Hydrothermal Field. I have designed a planetarium show within OpenSpace to connect this ocean expedition and it’s importance to astrobiology space science.
I am passionate about sidewalk astronomy and frequently take telescopes out to public places to share our wonderful night sky with whoever happens to be passing by.
In my personal life, I am a proud mom to two kiddos, Adaline and Miles. I have been keeping bees for 8 years now, and have a derp of a dog named Hubble. I also go on lots of adventures, both for work and recreationally as a SCUBA diver and love to share what I learn with others on social media. Come explore our amazing pale blue dot with me!
